The Parlour

A speakeasy for people who would rather roll dice than drink gin

In 1926 you needed a password to get a drink. In Edgemead you need a WhatsApp message to get a seat.

The Silver Key is a private games room in a quiet suburban study. One long walnut table with eight velvet chairs around it, brass lamps, a bust of Mr Lovecraft keeping watch from the sideboard, and cabinets holding over a hundred games and expansions.

There is one table and one game each night, so the evening belongs to whoever is sitting at it. We don't do walk-ins, we don't do crowds, and we don't put the address on the internet. What we do is set the table for you. Tell us who is coming and what you fancy, and the right game will be unboxed, sorted and ready when you sit down. We'll teach it, too.

Why the Silver Key? In Lovecraft's story of the same name, the key opens a door back into dreams. Ours just opens a door in Edgemead. Close enough.

How it works

Three knocks and you're in

Ask for the key

Message us on WhatsApp. Tell us how many of you there are, which evening you'd like (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday), and what sort of night you're after: a four-hour battle against the Ancient Ones, a heavy economic brain-burner, or something light and loud.

We set the table

We confirm your seats and send the address. There is one table and one game a night, so once the game is agreed it is unboxed, sorted and laid out before you arrive. Tea and coffee are waiting. You walk in and start playing.

Sit down and play

Your host teaches the rules, answers the awkward questions and keeps the evening moving. Never played before? That's the point. Every game on the shelf has been taught at this table.

Evenings

Pick your poison

One table, one game, one night. Most evenings fall into one of these shapes. Tell us which and we'll take it from there.

I
The Arkham Files · 3 to 5 hours

Investigator Nights

The house speciality. Up to eight investigators around the one table against the Mythos, with every expansion on the shelf. Cosmic dread, cups of tea, and at least one person going insane in Innsmouth.

On the table: Eldritch Horror, Arkham Horror (Third Edition), Mansions of Madness, Arkham Horror: The Card Game, Reign of Cthulhu.

II
Heavy strategy · 2 to 4 hours

The Long Table

For people who enjoy a spreadsheet with their supper. Deep, competitive, deeply satisfying. We teach the rules; the grudges you bring yourself.

On the table: Brass: Birmingham, Ark Nova, Dune: Imperium, Scythe, Terraforming Mars, Spirit Island, Puerto Rico.

III
Light & social · 2 to 3 hours

Parlour Games

Quick to learn, hard to stop. Bluffing, deduction and betrayal for up to eight. The right evening for a group that wants to talk as much as play.

On the table: Decrypto, Coup, Love Letter, Citadels, Secret Hitler, Sushi Go Party!, Condottiere.

IV
First-timers · 2 to 3 hours

The Initiation

Never played anything beyond Monopoly? Good. Start here. Modern classics that are easy to learn and impossible to forget, taught gently.

On the table: Wingspan, Catan, Carcassonne, Dominion, Everdell, 7 Wonders Duel.

V
Recurring group · same seats, same night

The Campaign

Claim the table on a standing night and play a story through to the end over weeks or months. We keep your characters, your progress and your seats between sessions.

On the table: Gloomhaven, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, Descent: Journeys in the Dark, Arkham Horror: The Card Game, Nemesis.

VI
All eight seats · yours alone

The Private Table

There is only ever one table, so book all eight seats and the whole night is yours: a birthday, a team night or a very specific kind of date. Choose your game, or let us build the evening for you.

Ask us: we'll put together a menu of games for your group and time.

The Library

Forty-seven games. Sixty-eight expansions. One very full cabinet.

Every title lives on the shelf and has been played at this table. Only one comes out each night, so choose well. A few favourites to start with.

The Room

Somewhere in Edgemead

A study, not a shop. One table, eight chairs, and cabinets full of games. You'll get the street on confirmation and the door will be unmarked. Look for the light in the window.

House rules

The rules of the house

Short, and mostly common sense. The Necronomicon is longer.

Questions

Frequently asked, quietly answered

Where exactly are you?

Edgemead, in Cape Town's northern suburbs. The street address goes to confirmed guests over WhatsApp and nowhere else.

How do I book?

WhatsApp us. Tell us how many people, which evening you'd like (we open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday), and the kind of night you want. We'll confirm your seats, agree the game, and send the address. There's no online booking form, on purpose.

What does the R30 cover include?

Your seat for the session, the game set up and taught, and refreshments through the evening: tea and coffee. It is a cover charge, not a profit centre.

How many tables are there?

One. Eight chairs around it, and one game on it each night. Whoever books first sets the game; if they haven't filled all eight seats, we may offer the rest to others who'd like to join that game.

Can I come on my own or as a pair?

Yes. Tell us and we'll let you know which nights have seats open at the table and what's being played, or put you down for a night that's forming. Some of the best Investigator Nights are strangers by 7pm and a coven by 11.

Do I need to know the rules?

No. Every game on the shelf has been taught at this table many times. We'll get you playing in fifteen minutes and stay close for the tricky bits.

How long is a session?

One sitting a night, usually three to four hours. The big Arkham games can stretch to five when the Ancient One wakes up. We'll agree a start and rough finish when you book.

Can I choose the game?

Absolutely. Browse the library and name it. One game comes out each night, so if you're joining a table someone else has booked, the game is already chosen. If you'd rather be surprised, tell us the mood and the player count and we'll pick.

Can we bring our own game, or a bottle?

Your own game, yes, by arrangement. A bottle, no. The Silver Key is a dry house: no alcohol is served or brought in. Tea and coffee are on us.

Is it suitable for kids?

Guests need to be 16 or older. Sorry, no exceptions; the games run late and some of them are genuinely unsettling.

Can I buy a game I fell in love with?

The shelf itself isn't for sale, but tell us and we'll help you get your own copy.

Reservations

Knock three times

There's no form to fill in and no password to remember. Just say hello, tell us who's coming and which night, and we'll set the table.
